Day 5: Klessheim Palace, Austria

Day 5 continued
Before we left Salzburg for good, we stopped at Klessheim palace. It’s turned into a casino now.

Jeff had researched it, and Hitler had been there many times; one of the times, he had signed an order to send the Hungarian Jews to Auschwitz.

Once a weapon demonstration took place at this palace, and an assassination was planned there for Hitler. The man who did it had tried to assassinate him a few times, but every time something went wrong.  Only a couple of weeks later was the Valkyrie assassination attempt. Pretty incredible to think about; we couldn’t stop staring at it. It was a really pretty.

Yes, we drove up the lane just as they did way back when and recorded it.
This is a link to Musselini and Hitler coming up this same driveway--Jeff loves it. Start the video at 1:05 and you could probably stop at 2:35. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZH-CJechOJ4

By the time that we left Salzburg, I was pretty tired and dozed off quickly. Jeff got this video while driving away from the city.

If you can't hear him, Jeff says "It must be the last day of the trip."

Don't you worry--I woke up in time to see all this on our drive home:

There are lots of random old fortresses on the tops of mountains all over Europe--it's awesome

We looked through our pictures, and they can’t do it justice. Ah well. At least we know for ourselves! It was a gorgeous, fun trip and we enjoyed it so much.

P.S. Hope you Enjoyed the pictures, Aunt Brenda! (She and her husband and two little boys lived in Germany for awhile).
